Christmas is the happiest time of the year. But due to COVID-19, this year is different. You must maintain social distancing to keep you and your family safe. Apart from social distancing, you’ll have to follow some HVAC tips for a safer Christmas vacation. In this article, I’ll talk about those HVAC tips so that you can have a safer Christmas vacation with your family.

Top 4 HVAC Tips for Safer Christmas Vacation

1.   Check Your HVAC Air Filter

Due to COVID-19, you’re staying at your more than ever. That means you’re using your HVAC system more. As a result, there is a high chance that your HVAC air filter will get dirty very quickly.

As we all know, an HVAC air filter’s primary function is to block small particles from entering your space. The more you use your HVAC system, the more your HVAC air filter gets dirty. That’s why it has become more important to check and replace your HVAC air filter, especially at Christmas.

Again, if you’re worried about your indoor air quality during this uncertain time, you can start using highly efficient HVAC air filters like HEPA or MERV air filters. These HVAC air filters can block micro particles like bacteria and viruses from entering your space. As a result, you can enjoy your Christmas without the fear of getting infected by the virus.

However, while buying these highly efficient HVAC air filter, make sure that the HVAC air filter is competent with your HVAC system. If your HVAC system is old, there is a high possibility that it won’t fit a HEPA or MERV air filter. To check the competency of your HVAC system, consult with your nearby HVAC professional.

2.   Don’t Decorate the Vents

Christmas isn’t Christmas without the Christmas tree, decoration, and party. However, don’t put the Christmas tree or do any decoration near your vent.

HVAC vents and registers take up a lot of space and a crucial part of your house operating system. That’s why you’ll have to treat your HVAC vents and registers carefully.

When they are blocked, your HVAC system won’t get enough air supply. As a result, your HVAC system won’t be able to produce your desired heating. That’s why while decorating, make sure that you don’t put anything near your vents and registers.

Again, many homeowners have a live tree in their home. However, don’t put a live tree in front of your HVAC vents and registers. If you put a live tree in front of your HVAC vents and registers, your tree will die and may cause a fire hazard.

3.   Keep an Eye on Your HVAC Thermostat

As you’ll have a smaller Christmas party this year, you’ll have to set your HVAC thermostat settings accordingly. A small change in your HVAC thermostat setting can make a lot of difference while saving money.

While saving money on heating bills this year on Christmas, invest in a good programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat will allow you to set the temperature according to your requirement. Also, some programmable thermostats can detect people in a room and set the room temperature accordingly. This feature can help you save money when there are guests in your house at Christmas.

Apart from this, you can schedule your HVAC thermostat temperature with a programmable thermostat. For example, if your guests are arriving in the evening, you’ll have to set a different temperature compared to an empty house in the morning. If you don’t have a programmable thermostat, you’ll have to set the HVAC thermostat manually. But when you have a programmable thermostat, you’ll have to schedule the temperature once, and you don’t have to touch the thermostat again.

4.   Check Your Smoke Detector

The last thing you will want in this pandemic is to have a fire in your house. To keep your house safe from fire, smoke, and carbon monoxide detector is a must-have tool. If you already have one in your home, make sure that your carbon monoxide and smoke detector batteries aren’t dead.

It’s recommended that you check your batteries every month. If the batteries are dead or about to, replace them as soon as possible. Because at the end of the day, nobody wants to see their house on fire, especially during Christmas.
