On a hot summer day, you turned on your AC and you noticed instead of blowing cold air, your AC is blowing hot air. It is undoubtedly the most frustrating situation you will face. There can be a number of reasons for this problem.

Your AC may have a problem in the compressor or the return duct is broken or has a leakage. Some problems are easy to solve and even you can do it. But, a delay in solving the problem can cause permanent damage to your air conditioner and you may need full AC repair. Here are the few reasons why your AC is blowing hot air:

Top 5 Reasons Why My AC is Blowing Hot Air

1. The Thermostat is set to Heat/ON

It is a silly mistake and very common. Check your thermostat, whether it is set to heat or not. If it is set to heat then set it to cool mode. Also, check your thermostat to see if your thermostat is set to ON or AUTO. If it is set to ON, set it to AUTO. Because when the thermostat is set to ON, the fans of your air conditioner will rotate, even when then AC is not producing cool air. So, check your thermostat and set the thermostat to Cool and AUTO mode. You can fix this by yourself.

2. Restricted Airflow

To blow cold air, the air conditioner needs a clean path or passage. A dirty condenser or air filter may cause this problem. Because when there is dirt or debris on the condenser or air filter, it reduces the amount of air coming out of the vents. You will face this problem if you haven’t changed your air filter for a long time or you didn’t put your AC in maintenance in a year. So, the solution to this problem is to change your dirty AC filter and send your AC for maintenance as soon as possible.

3. Power Outage in the Outside Unit

It is one of the most common problems behind hot air blown by your AC. If this is the case, check the emergency shutoff switch and the circuit breaker. If you are regularly checking the circuit breaker and shutoff switch, there is a high possibility that you may have a bigger issue in your electrical line. It is recommended to call a professional electrician or HVAC expert as soon as possible to solve this problem and keep your house safe.

4. Low Freon or Refrigerant

Refrigerant or Freon is the main element behind blowing cool air that flows through the AC. So, when the Freon level drops down, your air conditioner will not blow cool air like before. When your AC is fully functioning, you don’t need to refill the refrigerant to your AC because the air conditioner has a closed-loop. So, low on Freon is only possible when you have a leakage in the duct. Leakage size determines whether the cooling will drop slowly or at a higher rate. But in the end, if you have a leakage in the duct, your AC will blow hot air. You can request and appointment with HVAC professionals for a free quote.

5. Dirt or Debris on the Condenser Coil

Condenser coil releases the heat to the environment or atmosphere. But the condenser coil can easily be damaged or can be filled with dust and debris. When there are dust and debris on the condenser coil, the condenser coil doesn’t perform effectively and as a result, your air conditioner starts blowing hot air. It is recommended that you check the condenser coil from time to time, especially in summer and winter.
