A heat pump is your best friend in those chilly winters as it helps you to stay warm & comfortable inside. When you’re buying a new heat pump, you’ll have to consider a few things. So, here is the list of things you’ll need to consider before buying a heat pump

5 Things to Consider Before Buying a Heat Pump

1.   Weather

Generally, heat pumps work efficiently and provide heat without hindrance in almost every part of the US. But if you live in extreme weather where winter and summer are severe, you’ll require an auxiliary heating system.

2.   Efficiency

If you live in the Midwest, Northeast, Pacific Northwest, and Mountain states, minimum SEER is 13. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, which is a cooling efficiency measuring way for air-source and ductless split HVAC systems. For the rest of the areas, this SEER is a minimum of 14. Again, the minimum HSPF rating is 7.7, regardless of the states. Here HSPF stands for Heating Seasonal Performance Factor. So, before buying a heat pump, you’ll have to consider these ratings.

3.   Size

Size is an important factor for heat pumps. Before buying a heat pump, you’ll have to consider the size of your house or your office space. Because if you buy an oversized or undersized heat pump, you’ll not get the desired result from the heat pump. Besides, it’ll increase the energy bill when you don’t buy it accordingly. To determine the right size heat pump for your home or office space, you can contact an HVAC professional. The HVAC professional will calculate the thickness of the wall, foundation of your building, insulation, air filters, etc.

4.   Fuel Source

There are different types of heat pumps, depending on the source of the fuel. These are gas, electric, and oil heat pump. Before buying any of these, you’ll need a brief idea about these types. If you want to heat your home or office space economically, the gas furnace will be the right option for you. A gas furnace uses natural gas to heat your area. Again, if you’ve ample space in your house, you can choose the oil furnace. Oil is the dominant source of heat, and the furnace which uses oil will definitely give you more heat. But it has some disadvantages for example, it’ll create more dirt than a gas furnace and it’ll be expensive to operate. An oil furnace can be very useful for those old houses which don’t have any gas lines.

If you’re looking for the most economical solution to heat your house, an electric heat pump can be the solution for you. An electric heat pump uses less electricity and transfers heat from one air stream to another air stream. The other benefit of the electric heat pump is that it can be used as an HVAC system in the summer as it can produce cold air. So, an electric heat pump can be used as the heating and cooling HVAC system.

5.   Zoning

This problem is common in many houses- some areas of the house get hotter or colder faster. This depends on the location of the thermostat and the construction of the heat pump. If your thermostat is located near those areas of your house, you’ll face this problem. The zoning system can solve this problem. The zoning system divides your entire home into different zones and controls those zones by different thermostats. So, when your heat pump has a zoning system, you’ll get even heat and cold air in all your rooms. So, before buying a heat pump, you should look for this because you don’t want some of the areas of your home to get colder or warmer than other rooms.
