Correct thermostat setting or programming is important as it increases the comfort in your house and lowers the energy bills on heating and cooling. Also, when you set your thermostat correctly, it’ll help you to avoid frequent HVAC repairs. In this article, I’ll talk more about the importance of the correct thermostat setting.

Importance of Correct Thermostat Setting

1.    Energy Saving

When we use HVAC equipment for heating and cooling, our main concern is about the costs associated with it. But sometimes, because of our actions, we cannot lower the electric bills of the HVAC system. However, if you can correctly set the thermostat setting, we can save tons of money on electric bills. For this, you can buy a programmable thermostat for your HVAC system. A programmable or smart thermostat is a great way to reduce electric bills. You’ll just have to set the temperature and schedule it. The programmable thermostat will do the rest by itself. You don’t even have to set the thermostat setting every time you use it. That’s how it’ll save your time too.

When you use a programmable or smart thermostat in your house, you can save up to $200 per year. This is equal to the electric bill of one month or even more. So, buy a smart thermostat and install it in your HVAC equipment.

2.    Getting the Most Out of Your HVAC System

If you want to get the most out of your HVAC system, you should set the temperature correctly on your thermostat. When the temperature difference between the indoor and outdoor is low, the HVAC system provides heating and cooling efficiently. So, try to set a temperature that isn’t very low or very high. For example, in winter, try to set your thermostat setting to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. It’ll help you to save at least 10% on electric bills.

Many house owners think that if they lower the temperature, their home or office space becomes cool faster. But this isn’t true. In fact, when you set your thermostat at a very low temperature, it’ll put a strain on your HVAC system. As a result, your HVAC system will require frequent repairs and will cost you big bucks.

Whatever temperature you set in your HVAC system, the HVAC system will take time to reach that temperature and provide you heating and cooling. But when you set the thermostat at low temperature, it puts a strain on your compressor and HVAC system. Always try to set the thermostat to room temperature. It’ll, first of all, reduce strain on your HVAC system, and the most important thing, it’ll save you money on electric bills.

To set the ideal thermostat setting, a programmable thermostat can be the best solution for you. Every degree you increase or decrease than the ideal temperature, it’ll cost you an extra 2% on the electric bill. Now, I’ll tell you about the ideal thermostat setting for both heating and cooling.

3.    Heating Temperature

During the coldest months of the year, you can set your thermostat settings to 68 degrees Fahrenheit during the days. It will save your money as it will consume less energy. The US Department of Energy says that if you lower your settings by 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit for 7-8 hours every day, it’ll reduce the energy consumption by up to 15% every year.

Also, when you’re home, you can set your thermostat to 71 degrees Fahrenheit. Most of the homeowners feel comfortable at this temperature. If you feel a little bit chilly or cold, you can set the ceiling fan into the clockwise mode. You will find a switch at the base of the fan to perform this function. When you set the ceiling fan to clockwise rotation, the warm air will be forced to stay down in your room.

4.    Cooling Temperature

When you are home, and it’s hot outside, set your thermostat setting to 78 degrees Fahrenheit. But when you’re outside, you can set the temperature higher. It’ll help you to save a significant amount of money. Always remember that less difference in temperature between the outside and inside will save you big bucks and will put less strain on your HVAC system.
