Scammers are everywhere who are always ready to earn extra money from you by scamming. This includes furnace repairs too. In this article, I’ll talk about 3 common furnace repair scams in Dallas, and ways to avoid them.

3 Common Furnace Repair Scams

1.    Your Furnace Heat Exchanger Is Cracked & It’ll Kill Your Family

It’s the most common HVAC furnace repair scam in Dallas. When you call HVAC professional to repair your furnace, they’ll tell you that your furnace heat exchanger is cracked, and it’s leaking deadly Carbon Monoxide. If you don’t take action quickly, you and your family members will die because of this gas. Also, they’ll offer you a discount on the repair.

This scare tactic will force you to make decisions quickly, and you’ll end up making a reasonable yet foolish decision. So, how do you know whether your furnace has a cracked heat exchange or not?

A furnace heat exchanger is an important part of your furnace, and it gets cracked over time due to many reasons. But that doesn’t mean that your cracked heat exchanger will produce Carbon Monoxide. Yes, the level of Carbon Monoxide may increase a bit, but it’s not deadly. In most modern furnaces, the chance of Carbon Monoxide emission from your heat exchanger is almost zero. So, you can consider the Carbon Monoxide production from your cracked heat exchanger as a myth.

When an HVAC professional tells you that you have a cracked heat exchanger, tell him or her to show you the crack. If you really have a cracked heat exchanger, and the HVAC professional tells you that the heat exchanger is producing Carbon Monoxide, tell him/ her to show you the proof. All the reputed HVAC professionals have a Carbon Monoxide detector, and if the HVAC professional fails to show you the proof, then it’s a scam.

Older furnaces can leak Carbon Monoxide, but it’s because of other reasons such as lack of combustion air, or improper venting. This problem can be resolved by cleaning the furnace or by fixing the root problem.

2.    “Right Now” Discount Offers

Old furnaces are more prone to repairs, and when it needs repair, you’ll have to spend $300-$400 every time. But when your furnace is more than 10 years old, there’s no point in repairing your old furnace because, if you repair your old furnace, it’ll last for a maximum of one year. After that, you’ll have to repair the furnace again. This cycle will continue until you buy a new furnace. Reputed HVAC professionals will suggest you buy a new furnace when your furnace is old and needs repair because it’s economical to buy a new furnace rather than repairing your old furnace.

HVAC scammers will tell you that they will that they’ll repair your furnace at a very low cost. They’ll tell you that if you repair your furnace right then, you’ll get an x% amount of discount. But you shouldn’t fall for it. In reply, you’ll tell that you need some time to think about it, and you’ll let him or her know whether you’ll repair your furnace or not. That’s how you can avoid this type of scam.

3.    Unnecessary Furnace Duct Cleaning

Some fraud HVAC companies or professionals will try to sell their expensive furnace duct cleaning service. Also, they’ll show one or two clogged air register as proof that your furnace duct needs cleaning. But you should remember that just because your ducts are dirty doesn’t mean that you need cleaning. Most of the biological contaminants cannot survive in dry conditions. When you run your furnace, your furnace air ducts become dry, and those biological contaminants die instantly.

In this case, you can tell the HVAC company or professional that you’ll call them later, or you can use some excuses to avoid them.

How to Avoid Getting Scammed?

When you need an HVAC professional or company, always go for a reputed one. You can check reviews about the HVAC company on the internet. Also, you can read about the basic information about your furnace. There are a good number of reputed HVAC professionals in Dallas whom you can trust and do your repairs. Also, before making any decision about your furnace, talk to other HVAC professionals in Dallas about it.
